Since the Toyota RAV4’s launching in 1994, it has been among the SUV segment’s greatest stalwarts. It comes recommended for its reliability and practicality, two main reasons it has served as a dependable car for families, adventurers, and daily commuters.
Even the most fabled models can have their share of problems, though, and the 2024 RAV4 doesn’t stay outside that list. This blog aims to highlight all the issues reported by owners and critics so that people have a fair idea of what they are getting into.
Legacy of the RAV4 and Challenges Today
Toyota has been synonymous with reliability for nearly a decade, and none reflects this better than its RAV4, which has stood tall since 1994 as one of the most dependable models. As far as car buyers can remember, it is cost-effective and long-lasting.
However, even the most polished models have their glitches. While regular maintenance will fix most problems before they happen, a few cannot be eradicated, especially on older versions clocking many miles.
Most Common Problems With Toyota RAV4 That You Should Know About

Excessive Oil Consumption
Many owners of third-generation RAV4s report excessive oil consumption; the 2006-2008 models are familiar. The VVT engine fitted in them is the 2.4-litre 2AZ FE, which also powers the Camry, Highlander, and Matrix. The problem here lies in the design of the piston ring—particularly the oil control ring. Cleaning enough oil off the cylinder wall is somewhat inefficient, which contributes to excessive oil consumption.
This can be achieved through frequent checks on oil levels and topping up the oil when necessary. Sadly, engine replacement is often the best solution, and it can be an expensive repair.
Steering Issues
Another common issue among RAV4 owners is that the vehicle has problems with steering. The 2006 to 2008 RAV4 models tend to clunk or click upon wheel steering, probably due to a faulty steering shaft. Other owners experienced EPS problems that caused the steering wheel to become very hard to turn or even freeze on the owner. These instances may be hazardous and increase the risk of accidents.
More recent models—but especially 2019-2021 RAV4s—have also been complained about regarding their steering. Drivers described it as a “pulling” or “drifting” sensation right after the vehicle gets wet. Some 2019 models have lost electric power steering assistance altogether.
Transmission Lag and Slipping
Though many do, RAV4s have the worst reputation for transmission problems. The shifting problem, jerking transmission, and ECM failures are the major problematic issues with which these vehicles are plagued. The problem was so bad that Toyota extended its warranty on those models.
More recently, transmission complaints have also been lodged against the 2019 RAV4. Owners describe hesitation during acceleration from a slow roll with lurches occurring. The model year has had seven active recalls to its credit since it emerged on the market, and the ECM probably causes these.
Electrical Problems and Possible Battery Fire
In November 2023, Toyota recalled model years 2013-2018 RAV4s due to the potential for electrical fires. Almost 2 million vehicles were affected, as the battery slipped out of its tray and caused a short circuit. Dealerships will receive a free replacement of the battery tray, hold-down bracket, and cheerful terminal cover from Toyota.
Other electrical problems involve malfunctioning stereos, infotainment systems, and navigation displays. Many of these can be linked directly to the overall faulty electrical system, which also directly connects with the EPS.
The 2024 RAV4: A Mixed Bag
The 2024 RAV4 has seen mixed reviews, with several significant criticisms from Consumer Reports. Whereas this model once topped the charts for this rating, the 2024 version slid in several areas. Some key complaints include:
- Noisy Acceleration: It’s just that the constant drone from the engine was relentless and annoying.
- Stiff Ride: The multi-terrain system is overly tight, resulting in an unarguably firm ride.
- Reduced Interior Space: Higher ground clearance and a more comprehensive, shorter body with the new design cut down on interior space and headroom.
- Poor Visibility: The thick rear pillars blind the driver’s view.
- Bland Interior: The cabin features cheap, plasticky trim.
- Optional Safety Features: BSW and RCTW are optional.
- Lane Assist Malfunctions: The lane-keeping assist wants constant readjusting, at least on country roads.
Personal Take
One reviewer shared an experience where she almost bought a 2024 RAV4, first looking at the LE trim; however, this model had a very uncomfortable driver’s seat that caused back pain. She subsequently test-driven the XLE, which was adjustable in the lumbar, and thus redeemed her decision with the willingness to pay for a higher trim pricing. This shows comfort matters and test-driving the car before purchase.
